How to Plan Electrical and Plumbing for a New Pole Barn

Whether you’re building a workshop, garage, or mixed-use pole barn, electrical and plumbing planning should start early, ideally before the first post is set.

Adding utilities later can become expensive, especially after the concrete is poured or the interior walls are finished.

Here’s what to think through before construction begins.

1. Start With How You’ll Use the Building

Before running conduit or pipe, think through both your current and future needs.

Ask yourself:

  • Will the building be used year-round or seasonally?
  • Will you install HVAC, compressed air, or large equipment?
  • Do you need a utility sink, bathroom, shower, or laundry area?
  • Will part of the building become an office or finished space?
  • Could you add an electric vehicle charger, lift, welder, or other equipment later?

These decisions affect service size, fixture locations, and how utilities should be routed.

2. Plan Enough Electrical Capacity

Shops and garages often need more power than expected.

Panel and Service Size

Consider:

  • The total electrical load of tools, lighting, HVAC, and equipment
  • Whether separate circuits or subpanels are needed for different areas
  • Future additions such as welders, compressors, lifts, mini-splits, or vehicle chargers

The appropriate service size should be determined by a licensed electrician based on your planned loads.

Outlets and Lighting

Plan outlets around how the space will actually be used.

  • Add plenty of outlets near workbenches and equipment
  • Place outlets throughout the building to reduce extension-cord use
  • Include appropriate protected outlets in wet and exterior locations
  • Use bright overhead lighting with task lighting in work areas
  • Consider ceiling outlets or retractable power drops

Good lighting and outlet placement can make a major difference in daily use.

Underground Conduit

Detached buildings usually require underground service from the existing power source.

Coordinate this work before:

  • Final grading
  • Backfilling
  • Concrete placement
  • Driveway installation

It may also make sense to install spare conduit for future electrical, internet, security, or communication lines.

3. Plan Plumbing Around Drainage and Cold Weather

Plumbing layouts are harder to change than electrical layouts, especially once the slab is poured.

Key considerations include:

  • Drainage: Floor drains may be useful for washing vehicles, equipment, or floors
  • Slope: Drain lines need enough fall to move waste properly
  • Venting: Plumbing fixtures require properly designed venting
  • Freeze protection: Water lines need to be installed according to local frost-depth and insulation requirements
  • Waste connection: Determine where sewer or septic connections will be made and how far the lines must run

Common pole barn plumbing features include:

  • Utility or wash sinks
  • Toilets and handwashing sinks
  • Showers or changing areas
  • Hose bibs
  • Animal watering systems
  • Floor drains

The final layout should be coordinated with a licensed plumber and the local building department.

4. Rough In Utilities Before the Slab

If the building will have a concrete floor, underground plumbing and electrical work should be completed first.

Before pouring the slab:

  • Mark fixture, drain, and equipment locations on the floor plan
  • Install plumbing lines and conduit
  • Add sleeves where utilities pass through the concrete
  • Test water and drain systems
  • Confirm measurements against the final interior layout

Once the concrete is placed, relocating utilities becomes much more difficult and expensive.

5. Plan for Future Expansion

Even if you’re starting with a basic shell, a little preparation can save significant work later.

Consider:

  • Installing spare conduit
  • Adding plumbing stubs for future fixtures
  • Sizing the electrical panel for future circuits
  • Leaving accessible cleanouts and connection points
  • Planning for a future office, bathroom, loft, or finished area

You don’t need to install everything immediately. The goal is to avoid cutting concrete or reopening finished walls when your needs change.
